The story is set (probably) in India, however in an oriental country. The male characters all have Chinese names, while the female characters almost always use quaint nicknames. The protagonist of the story is the rich Hsi-men Ching, a 40-year-old pharmacist, married to 5 splendid young wives (the oldest is 26 years old). In addition to his wives, he also has to satisfy a lover, the widow Madame P'ing, and also keeps a virgin at a brothel, Cinnamon Blossom, until she reaches the age to be deflowered. Worried about his performance, Hsi-men turns to a monk who procures him 110 pills for virility, recommending however not to take more than one a month. Hsi-men does not comply with the prescription and already consumes 2 on the first night. As the days go by, the man abuses it abundantly, managing however to satisfy all his women.
